Thomas Meakin Lockwood (1830–1900) was an English architect whose main works are in and around Chester, Cheshire. He was born in London, and brought up in East Anglia. He trained in Chester with T. M. Penson, then established his own independent practice in in the city in about 1860. His most important patron was the First Duke of Westminster. His sons W. T. and P. H. Lockwood joined him as partners in the practice in 1892. According to the architectural historian Edward Hubbard he is the only 19th-century Chester architect, other than John Douglas, to have acquired a national reputation. A memorial window to his memory is in the north aisle of St John the Baptist's Church, Chester.

Amidst the undergrowth and just a couple of graves along from John Douglas (see previous picture) is that of another prolific architect, Thomas Meakin Lockwood (1830-1900, "threescore years and ten" as his memorial states). His work is everywhere in Chester- the Old Bank Chambers, next to the Eastgate in Foregate Street (1895), St. Michael's Buildings and Arcade in Bridge Street, the Grosvenor Museum in Grosvenor Street (1886), the rebuilt Bishop Lloyd's House in Watergate Street (1900- originally 17th C), the Blossoms Hotel, St. John Street (1896- with additions by one of his sons 1911), the Handbridge Men's Institute (1895), Northgate Church (1874) and, beloved by our tourists, the fanciful and ornate mock-medieval buildings on the junction of Bridge Street and Eastgate Street at The Cross (1888). The Council Chamber in the Town Hall is also his work, rebuilt after a disastrous fire in 1896. Learn more about his life and work here.

LOCKWOOD, FREDERICK WILLIAM
Born: 1840
Died: 1917
Architect and engineer, of Belfast active in the 1870s, 1880s and 1890s. Frederick William Lockwood, son of William Lockwood, brewer, of Woodbridge, Suffolk, was born at Woodbridge on 11 January 1840. From 1851 to 1854 he was a pupil at Ackworth School, a Quaker boarding shool in Yorkshire. The date of his arrival in Ireland is not recorded, but by 1889 he was working from 16 Waring Street, Belfast, the same street in which JOHN RUSSELL JOHN RUSSELL had his office.(1) He may be the same person as the 'F.E. Lockwood' of 91 Victoria Street, Belfast, who advertised for tenders for building a house in Antrim on 6 June 1903.(2)

During the 1870s Lockwood was an active member of the Belfast Architectural Association, and on 4 March 1884 he lectured to the Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society on 'Sanitary Protection Associations'.(3) He was also a keen antiquarian, contributing notes and drawings on ancient buildings in Ireland and elsewhere to the Irish Builder and to the Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland.(4) He exhibited measured drawings of Bonamargy Abbey, Co. Antrim, and Kilclief Castle, Co. Down, at the Belfast Industrial Exhibition in 1876. He was a member of the Frederick Street Quaker meeting, serving on the finance and property committee, and advised it professionally when a move to Upper Queen Street was mooted. The move did not take place; instead a competition was held for altering and enlarging the existing meeeting house, in which Lockwood was placed third.(5)

Lockwood, who married Ruth Creeth (d. 1923) on 23 April 1868, eventually retired to York, where he died on 30 June 1917.
